It’s always about money

The guest editorial from The Columbian and Seattle Times, claiming a court decision regarding school construction “highlights a growing nihilism that threatens the foundation of our society”? Nihilism is defined as “the rejection of all religious and moral principles, in the belief that life is meaningless.” I don’t agree. It’s always about money.

The McCleary School District filed a lawsuit against Washington claiming the state was not meeting its constitutional obligation to fund education. The McCleary School District won. Depending on how you define “win.” The Wahkiakum School District filed a lawsuit based on the same constitutional grounds. The Wahkiakum School District lost.

The editorial claims, “In Washington, districts can receive state aid for construction if 60% of local voters agree to provide half the funding through a bond measure.” Doesn’t half equal 50%?

Clarkston High School’s bond began at $90 million. Washington state said they would provide 10% resulting in $80 million. Not 50%. Add $80 million interest. The $9 million from Washington state hardly reduced the $160 million payback. Interest and unhappy taxpayers defeated the bond. Where’s the 50% The Columbian said Washington state would provide?

The editorial threw us a bone stating, “The Legislature should consider tweaking the funding models for school construction.” Tweaking a broken plan? Real solutions don’t result from “tweaking.”

No media coverage of SB5344? This bill establishes a fund for school construction, providing low interest loans for rural counties.

YES CHS, we challenge you to support this bill and truly make a difference.
