Join in Day of Service

Those of us who are old enough remember the horror and disbelief of Sept. 11, 2001. In 2009, Congress designated 9/11 as a Day of Service and Remembrance.

As a community, we come together to commemorate the day. This year, AmeriCorps Alums are offering you the opportunity to engage in service to honor those who were lost and the first responders who rushed in to help them.

AmeriCorps Alums have coordinated with the Lewiston YWCA to plan a bowl-painting service project. We hope that those who wish to honor and recognize the events of that day will join us at the YWCA, 300 Main St., from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, 9/11. The bowls will be part of their annual Soup-Port Our Shelter fundraiser.

We hope you will join us in honoring this day.

A recent opinion letter in a local paper opposing Proposition 1 was so rife with misinformation, that I feel I have to respond.

Proposition 1 is a nonpartisan voters’ rights initiative only. It neither endorses candidates nor “stacks” them, as the writer asserted. It takes no position on third-party candidates who are as free to run as Republicans, Democrats, etc. No one is forced to rank or vote for a candidate they don’t support and no one would waste their vote to do something that ridiculous.

The top four candidates from a single primary move on to the November election. Each voter ranks them in order of preference. Contrary to the naysayer’s statement, no vote is ever “thrown out.” Every vote is counted and tallied. The top vote-getter wins. It’s that easy, folks.

The writer attempted to mislead readers regarding voting machines and hand-counted ballots. Don’t be fooled. To date, no contractor for software or voting machines has been contacted. ... The cost breakdown just among registered voters would be a one-time contribution of $40. That’s a small price to pay for your precious right to vote, isn’t it?

Instead of threatening the voices and liberty of voters as the writer falsely insisted, Proposition 1 does the opposite, in that it reinstates the rights of 270,000 independent voters who are currently blocked from a system that their taxes pay for.

Democracy works when all citizens have the right to participate. Please vote yes on Proposition 1 this November. Thank you.
