A new day

Sunday morning, July 23, started out like any summer Sunday morning. A copy of the Lewiston Tribune under my arm, a cup of hot fresh coffee in my hand and a short walk to the patio overlooking the beautiful Lewiston-Clarkston Valley. As I browsed through the Tribune I eventually came to the editorial page. I glanced at Jim Fisher's column, like I always do, to see if I really wanted to get my blood pressure up this early in the morning. His articles always seem to set me off in the wrong direction. I have always respected his right to say whatever he wanted to, but somehow it didn't seem fair that he had such open access to the young minds of today swaying them with ideas I could not or would not accept.

But today was different: As I glanced at the article I found myself riveted in agreement. My heart pounded from a foreign feeling. Here was an article I totally agreed with and had for years. I read it again and looked at the authorship. Sure enough, it was Jim Fisher supporting nuclear power.

Jim, you are absolutely correct. I think your column should be run in every newspaper in America and every magazine and every college newspaper. Print 300 million copies and drop them as leaflets across America; you have condensed it all into a very short statement. Congratulations and well done, "my friend."

P.S. Sunday was the best Sunday I have ever had after reading the Tribune.

Movie's an eye-opener

Al Gore's documentary movie on global warming called "An Inconvenient Truth" is currently playing at the Village Centre Cinemas at 6:40 p.m. Regardless of your political persuasion or your opinion of Al Gore as a person, this movie is a must see for every responsible adult who calls planet Earth their home.

It coincides perfectly with the recent heat wave that we have been experiencing. It is a real eye-opener as to what we are doing to our planet. I genuinely encourage everyone in the valley to see it. You can look at a preview of the movie on the Internet.

Suing the taxpayers

It appears that through default, Donna Manchester's name may be on the ballot as the Democratic candidate for sheriff of Asotin County.

I understand that Ms. Manchester is suing the county and Wayne Weber personally for a purported unjust termination from the sheriff's department. While I have no knowledge of the particulars of this suit or its justification or merit, I question the logic of a vote for her as she is in essence, suing the taxpayers and voters of this county and then asking for their vote.

While not being a supporter of Mr. Weber, I question Ms. Manchester's sincerity as it appears that she may have more issues with the current sheriff than she does qualifications for the job she is seeking.

If Donna Manchester thinks she is the best candidate for the job she should either seek it, or sue the taxpayers of this county. She can't have it both ways.
