Charlene S. Howard

Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. Charlene S. Howard, 93, died Thursday, May 30, 2024, in Lewiston. She was born in November of 1930 in Memphis, Tenn., to Carl and Hattie Savage. Following graduation from Lipscomb University, where she earned degrees in Fine Arts and Elementary Education, she was married to Bob L. Howard and lived in the beautiful Pacific Northwest until her passing. Charlene spent many years teaching both public and private elementary school level classes touching the lives and hearts of thousands of children.

Charlene was also a very prolific painter using oil and watercolor mediums to create beautiful and realistic paintings of wildlife, landscapes, historic buildings, and portraits of children and adults. Early on she had the opportunity to study under Morgan Steinmetz, a retired “Saturday Evening Post” illustrator, and also attended classes at Portland State University.

Charlene was preceded in death by husband, Bob L. Howard; brothers, CP Savage, and Raymond Lee Savage; and sister Jeanette Savage. She is survived by sister Ann Dean; son, Brooks Howard (Donna); grandson, Taylor Howard (Kelsey); granddaughter, Megan Renfro (Ken Garson); great-granddaughter, Luca; grandson, Matt Renfro (Stephanie); great-grandson Landon.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers or gifts, please make donations in Charlene’s name to your local Veterans Administration nursing home.
