Asotin students won a title in the Washington State Regional robotics tournament against 50 teams last week at Lake Washington High School in Kirkland, Wash.

Contributing to the win were juniors Shawn Hills, Colin Weber, Jonah Ashby and eighth graders Gavin Hinkley and Awa Mbodji.

The team competed in the VEX Robotics Competition Over Under, which involves using a robot to score points. By winning Asotin achieved a top-100 world ranking, now tied for 46th, according to a news release from the Asotin-Anatone School District.

Team captain Hills said the team’s robot functioned well and coding for it went smoothly. The robot is named ZELEBE, which is the team’s number 39313Z upside down.

“We were able to capture back-to-back tournament wins,” Hills said in a news release.

The team’s coach, Tim Weber, said the competitions are an opportunity for Asotin students to connect with hundreds of teams in the state and country.

“The kids are constantly improving their robot and constantly creating new building plans,” Weber said in the news release.
