Girls of the valley will now have a place for organized sports and hobbies, such as is available to boys at the Lewiston Boys Club, after the signing yesterday of a contract between the Young Women’s Christian Ass’n and the Lewiston School District.
Terms of the agreement call for the rental of the Garfield School annex by the YWCA from the district for $1 a year. Final approval came at a meeting last night of the school board.
The Girls’ Center will open June 3 at 10 a.m. with a full schedule of summer activities. Board members felt that though other community agencies have provided programs for girls, the center will supplement those activities by providing a place for drop-in unstructured, noncompetitive activities.
Available will be a lounge for reading and study, outdoor sports, an exercise program, and arts and crafts, A flag football program may be started in the fall.
Sally Blevins, a Vista Volunteer, will be program coordinator and will organize the center with Janice Drake, program director of the Youth Services Bureau of the Department of Environmental & Community Services.
Recreation equipment and staff help have been pledged by several community agencies, and the Twin County United Way has provided extra funds. Board members anticipate that operating costs for the remainder of this year will run about $15,000, while a full year’s budget will be between $20,000 and $25,000. Anyone interested in donating time, equipment or funds to the center may contact the YWCA office.
In other business, the YWCA board of directors honored Hulda Riemer of Lewiston who is retiring after 13 years as housekeeper. Bebe DeLong of Lewiston was hired to fill the position.
The board accepted resignations from two members, Barbara Osborn and Grace Watson, who are resigning for personal reasons.
