Carl Shears, of Craigmont, holds the plaque commemorating one of two awards he received in this photo published in the May 18, 1983, Lewiston Tribune. The plaque is for his 1983 Governor’s Outstanding Volunteer Service Award. Shears also received the “People Helping People in the Northwest” distinguished volunteer award, according to the accompanying story, given by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. A coffee hour was held in his honor in Lewiston, and Shears’ volunteer activities included doing home repairs, sharing the harvest from his large garden with others, and transporting elderly people to meal sites, medical appointments or shopping. Joan Gossee, Area Agency on Aging service coordinator, said, “Due to his time and efforts, many elderly people in his area can remain at home instead of being placed in nursing homes.” Readers who would like to share their historical photos (20 years or older) from throughout the region may do so by emailing them to blasts@lmtribune.com or submitting them to: Blast from the Past, P.O.
