Andrew P. Emerson of McGhee Elementary School satisfactorily spelled out “s-a-t-i-s-f-a-c-t-i-o-n” and became the top Lewiston elementary school speller Friday.
After 39 minutes of competition, “opposition” stopped the opposition when finalist Todd Cooper of St. Stanislaus School faltered and missed the second “p.”
Fourth grader Emerson was later perfect to win the citywide title by carefully spelling out Cooper’s fateful flub and picking up all the marbles with calm satisfaction.

The city of Lewiston has been awarded a $1.5 million federal community development block grant to be used over the next three years to spur economic expansion.
The first $500,000, which is available for use almost immediately on a reimbursement basis, is part of a $7.2 million that will be distributed to 18 Idaho cities and counties this year and is expected to generate 1,800 new jobs, Gov. John Evans said in announcing the grants Friday at Boise.
Bruce W. Bullamore, a Lewiston community development director, said the city’s share should create some 600 jobs in the three-year life of the grant. Most of the money is allocated to expanding existing businesses, with lesser amounts for use in attracting new industry and for housing rehabilitation.
