Early planted gardens are expected to be doused with rain tonight and continuing through Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service at Spokane.

Jeremy Wolf, a meteorologist with the weather service, said the system that will move into the area tonight is expected to bring widespread precipitation to the region.

“We’re looking at a quarter- to half-inch of rain for tonight, and Wednesday will turn to more hit-and-miss showers with a slight chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon,” Wolf said.

The thunderstorms could bring some lightning but the main impact is rain. Temperatures are expected to drop to the low 60s in the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley; 50s for the Palouse and Camas Prairie; and in the 40s for the mountains and higher elevations.

That could mean some snow in the upper reaches, Wolf said.

The low pressure system Wednesday is expected to move out quickly and all the way into Wyoming by Thursday, Wolf said. There may be some residual showers Thursday but the forecast overall calls for warmer and drier weather.

But not for long. By Saturday another low pressure system is expected to drop in, “meaning another chance for rain and temperatures dropping back down to the 50s on the Palouse and 60s in the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley with breezy winds as well,” Wolf said.

Although the weather predictions may be a bummer for gardeners and baseball fans, “it’s not uncommon in May to get these systems passing through the region,” Wolf said.
