Fire crews were able to contain a fire that completely destroyed a motorhome and sent black smoke into the skies above Clarkston on Sunday afternoon.

Asotin County Fire District No. 1 responded at around 3 p.m. Sunday to 24th Street in the Clarkston Heights and found a motorhome that was fully engulfed on the property of the person who owned it. The motorhome was next to a shop that was also starting to catch fire, according to Asotin County Fire Chief Noel Hardin.

Crews broke the windows of the shop to attack the fire and prevent it from spreading. Fire crews got the fire under control in about 15 minutes but remained at the site to monitor the fire and check for hotspots. They were on scene for about an hour total, Hardin said.

The motorhome was completely destroyed and the shop had some exterior damage. No one was inside the motorhome or shop at the time of the fire, although medics from Lewiston and Clarkston were initially on scene, Hardin said.

He said it was fortunate the fire was able to be contained and there were no injuries, although the scene produced a lot of smoke.

“There was a huge column of black smoke that was visible from all around the area,” Hardin said.

The cause of the fire is believed to be from electrical malfunction, Hardin said.
