PULLMAN DeWayne Patterson, the quick, undersized defensive end who

shattered Washington State's sack records in his four-year career as starter,

was named first-team All-America on Tuesday by Football News.

Patterson joined Warren Sapp of Miami and Kevin Carter of Florida as defensive linemen on the first unit.

Those three players were also among the finalists announced last week for the same publication's Defensive Player of the Year award.

Patterson, a 6-foot-1, 250-pound senior from Oakland, Calif., had 131/2 sacks in the regular season, giving him a school-record 371/2 in his career. He had 17 sacks last year and made first-team All-Pacific-10 Conference.

He ranks third nationally in sacks this year behind Mark Beyers of Nevada-Las Vegas with 17 and Simeon Rice of Illinois with 16.

Patterson becomes WSU's first All-America first-team selec tion since Jason Hanson in 1989.

The Football News is one of several publications or organizations that choose national all-star teams, and Patterson is one of several members of WSU's standout defense who are probably being considered.

''It's a great honor for DeWayne personally and for the effort of our defensive football team,'' Washington State coach Mike Price said.
