PHOENIX, Ariz. Washington State pounded out 25 hits, including 15 for extra bases, in handing Dartmouth College a 22-12 setback in a non-conference baseball game played Monday afternoon at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
Jered Fowler and Jason Hairston each belted two home runs and drove home four runs for the Cougars (8-18). Duane Stewart, meanwhile, hit for the cycle, collecting a single, two doubles, a triple and his first home run of the year. Jared Clifford (1-0) worked the final five innings in relief of Todd Belitz to pick up his first win of the year.
Starter Chris Van Vliet (0-1) took the loss for Dartmouth (0-5), working the first six innings before Dan Godfrey finished up for the Big Green. Van Vliet allowed 23 hits and 21 runs.
The Cougars jumped on the Dartmouth starter in the first inning, scoring three runs on Jon Fischer's single and Hairston's first home run that scored Fischer.
WSU added five runs in the second, then three runs in each of the next three innings, followed by a four-run sixth inning. WSU's final run came in the eighth inning.
Dartmouth scored six runs in the fourth, all off Belitz, then pushed home two runs in the eighth and four runs in the ninth off Clifford.
Ty Solomon tripled home one Cougar run in the second, while Mike Wetmore doubled home another tally. Fischer also had a run-scoring double and Hairston singled home one run as the Cougars jumped out to an 8-0 lead.
Stewart, who started the second inning with a double, led off the third inning with a solo home run. Wetmore drove home another run with a single and Jim Horner doubled home the third run of the inning as WSU opened up an 11-0 lead.
In the fourth, the Cougars called out more long artillery. Hairston got his second home run to open the inning and Fowler followed with his first four-bagger. Solomon finished up the scoring with a run-producing single to give WSU a 14-0 lead.
Belitz ran into control problems in the fourth after handcuffing Dartmouth batters through the first three innings. Four walks and one Cougar error aided the Big Green's effort in the fourth. Brian Mosley's two-run home run accounted for the first two runs, while Greg Gilmer and Andrew Spencer each singled home two runs. Spencer ended the afternoon with five runs-batted-in.
The Cougars, with Clifford taking over for Belitz to start the fifth inning, answered Dartmouth's six-run rally by scoring three more times in the fifth and four times in the sixth. Randy Kaleikilo doubled home one run in the fifth, while Stewart's sacrifice fly accounted for another Cougar run. In the sixth Fowler belted his second home run of the day and the season, a three-run shot to left field.
