PULLMAN -- The Washington State baseball team split a doubleheader with Utah Valley State on Saturday afternoon, winning the first game 9-3 but falling 14-4 in the nightcap at Bailey-Brayton Field.

WSU (14-10) had 14 hits in the opener, with five Cougars coming up with two hits apiece. Brady Everett and Jim Murphy were the primary producers, driving in three and two runs, respectively.

Everett had a two-run single in the Cougars' most notable outburst, a four-run third inning. Murphy, who drew a bases-loaded walk in the third, hit a solo home run in fifth.

Wayne Daman Jr. (4-0) earned the victory in the first game, going six innings and allowing two runs, one earned, on seven hits. Utah Valley State starter Jed Jenson took the loss.

Murphy and Everett both homered in the nightcap, giving each of them five HRs on the season. But those were about the only Cougar highlights in a game dominated by the Wolverines (6-15).

Brady Drake pitched an eight-hitter, going the distance on 131 pitches, striking out two and walking three. And Utah Valley State rang up 19 hits, the most given up in a game by the Cougars this year.

The Wolverines got two home runs from Dan Bulow, while Nick Connor had four RBI.

Cougar freshman Matt Oye (0-1) took the second-game loss, giving up six runs in 2l innings.

Murphy's home run, in the fourth inning, and Everett's, in the fifth, were both solo shots.

Jay Miller went 4-for-7 for the day at the plate, and is hitting .636 for the series.

The teams will close out this weekend series today at noon.
