Behind a solid performance on the bump by Julian Washburn, the Lewis-Clark Twins beat the Eugene Challengers 11-3 Sunday at Harris Field in nonleague American Legion baseball action.

Chandler Tibbits and Riley Way had two RBI apiece to pace the Twins and Kolt Olson went 4-for-4 at the plate with a double and an RBI for the hosts.

That offense helped the Twins move to 2-2 on the year against the Challengers, "a good club," Twins coach Kyle Blackwell said.

"I think they're leading their league and they threw some pretty good arms."

As did the Twins.

"I was impressed with Julian Washburn tonight. He competed in the strike zone," Blackwell said of a player who fanned four while walking just two in seven innings of work.

"He was a good example of what we would like our starters to do," Blackwell added.

Retiring the side upon entering in the eighth, Logan Chase, in the final two innings, "was great," Blackwell said.

The Twins improved to 20-5 and "these are our first three nine-inning games this weekend," Blackwell said, noting that his team had been playing seven-inning games until this week. "It doesn't sound like a lot," he said of the extra few frames, "but (when) you add those two extra innings... you need your starters to be efficient and pitch to contact."

Bears 6, Blues 0

SPOKANE - Asotin County left six runners on base, four of those in scoring position and "that's a big deal," Blues coach Perry Black said of his team's shutout loss to Central Valley and the Bears' ace, Clay Kyle, in the Wood Bat Tournament Sunday.

The setback wraps up a stretch for the Blues in which they played 11 games in seven days, "definitely a rough stretch for us," Black said. "But the players competed their tails off and handled it extremely well."

The Blues went 1-3-1 in the tournament to move to 10-15-1 on the year. Black lauded the pitching of Devin Fry, who went the distance. But the Panthers' situational hitting "was not very good today," Black said of the difference. "We had chances numerous times."

Merchants 4, Suburban Dogs 2

GRESHAM, Ore. - On a road trip through Oregon, Orofino doubled up the host Suburban Dogs thanks to a complete game effort by pitcher James Bolling.

Ceding three hits, he fanned eight while walking just three and giving up only a single earned run.

"He had some quick innings in the middle of the game that really helped him out," Orofino coach Jeff Wilson said, lauding Bolling's breaking ball.

The Merchants improved to 10-12.

Cubs 12, Expos 1

SPOKANE - The Lewis-Clark Cubs used a 10-run second inning to blow open their final contest at the Coeur d'Alene Wood Bat Classic tournament, this contest taking place at Gonzaga Prep High.

"From the moment we got to the field to the moment we left, we were so focused and dialed in," Cubs coach Mark Medalia said after his team blasted the Expos in five innings.

Wyatt Baldwin lifted a grand slam in the second to make it 6-1, part of the Cubs' surge that helped the team improve to 9-10 on the year, a record that Medalia believes doesn't "define how good of a team we are.

"Today proved to me what kind of team we really are," the coach said of his team's win, which came with Coy Stout going the distance in just 88 pitches.
