PULLMAN - The Pullman High softball team scored 10 more total runs than Clarkston during its Great Northern League doubleheader Wednesday, but had to settle for a split. After bursting for a 20-7 win in the opener, Clarkston responded with a 9-6 victory the second game.
"They're playing with confidence right now and I want them to play that way and so it stings a little bit, but they know they can beat somebody by 20-7," Pullman coach Tara Briggs said. "I think that almost makes it seem more worse sometimes."
The first game saw Clarkston run out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first, but Pullman (8-6 overall, 7-3 GNL) responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame, thanks to a triple by Halley Ghighleri and a Bantams error. Things really opened up in the second inning, when they exploded for 11 runs.
Anne Mari Petrino ripped a double down the left-field line to tie the game at 5, and on the next at-bat Becca Wickard crushed a home run to left.
Wickard was one of several Greyhounds who went up to bat twice in the inning as Pullman blew the game open. Desi Tennant quickly made the score 8-5 on her single, and a double steal soon made it 10-5. Kenzie Druffel tacked on another run with a triple to make it 12-5, and when Miranda Davidson ripped an RBI single to put PHS ahead 13-5, the Greyhounds had scored 11 runs in the inning.
The second game was a different story, as Pullman lost despite outhitting Clarkston 15-12. Petrino, Ghighleri and Sarah Olson all had three hits, but the Greyhounds struggled to overcome a 4-0 deficit in the top of the first inning. Pullman got within 5-4 on Petrino's single, but that was as close as the Hounds would get.

Gwinn, a freshman, has been hot of late, going 7-for-8 in Pomeroy's last two games.
The Pirates were without two usual starters, which allowed other players to get into the game, coach Dave Boyer said.
