COTTONWOOD - The Prairie High boys' basketball team overcame a slow start to remain unbeaten by defeating Troy 43-31 on Saturday night in a Whitepine League Division I game.

The Trojans led 8-6 after the first quarter, but the Pirates outscored them in each of the next three.

"I thought Troy played really good man-to-man defense," said Prairie coach Kevin Chaffee, whose team improved to 3-0 on the season and 2-0 in league competition. "We kind of got our feet underneath us in that second quarter and had a pretty good run there."

The Pirates' Devin Ross nabbed seven rebounds to go with his team-high 15 points. Spencer Schumacher added nine points while Hunter Chaffee had a balanced stat sheet with seven points, eight rebounds and four assists.

Isaac Stoner of Troy was the game's high-scorer with 16.

NEZPERCE - The Logos Knights survived a frantic finish to gain their first win of the season, beating Nezperce in a Whitepine League Division II contest.

Following Nic Minudri's 3-pointer for Logos with one minute left, the visitors extended their one-point lead with a bonus free throw split, then weathered two credible but unsuccessful shots to tie by the Indians over the final 13 seconds.

Ben Euhus' one-and-one split with 13 seconds left virtually assured the Knights of no worse than overtime. He finished with 15 points and 15 rebounds.

Kamiah 59, Genesee 41

KAMIAH - Kamiah got off to a rare quick start and held off Genesee the rest of the way, as the Kubs cruised to a Whitepine League Division I victory.

Kamiah (3-2 overall, 2-1 in league) recently had a few slow starts, so made it a point of emphasis to burst out of the gate in this one, coach Aaron Skinner said. And the Kubs did, outscoring the Bulldogs 13-4 in the first period.

Kamiah was led in scoring by Kaleb Oatman (16 points), Luke Snyder (15) and Ben Dunning (13). Those three also controlled the rebounding battle while Tyrell Henry dished off 12 assists.

Genesee (1-3, 0-3) was paced by Edward Becker (15 points) and Jeffery Waisanen (10).

Grangeville 51, Weiser 43

WEISER - Held to four points in the first quarter of a nonleague contest against Weiser, Grangeville needed an answer for its early struggles. How about a change in tempo? The Bulldogs adopted a quicker offensive pace in the final three quarters to pull away.

"The second quarter we stepped up the game a little bit, they wanted to slow it down," Grangeville coach Kelcey Edwards said. "They moved the ball really well and were patient. After the first quarter we got into man-to-man defense and forced some turnovers."

Trey Dreadfulwater led all scorers with 18 points in the win, while Blake Darr added five assists for the Bulldogs, who improved to 2-2.

Lapwai boys split

LAPWAI - While playing host to the three-team Wildcat Shootout, Lapwai narrowly conceded its first loss of the season - 66-63 to Yakama Nation Tribal - before bouncing back with a 75-41 win over Lakeside.

In the first game, the Wildcats jumped out to a 21-5 lead and were up 22-13 at the end of the opening quarter, but got into foul trouble in the second as the visitors turned the tables for a 35-32 halftime edge. Lapwai reasserted itself in the third quarter and led 48-43 going into the fourth, but fell into more foul trouble there, while Yakama - buoyed by an abundance of free-throw conversions - delivered its highest-scoring frame of the contest at 23 points to pull out the win.

The second game was a different story, as the Wildcats asserted themselves early on and outscored Lakeside in each of the four quarters to build a dominant 34-point winning margin.

Emmitt Taylor III led Lapwai in scoring in both games to earn a net sum of 49 points, while Kendall Leighton and Payton Sobotta each totaled 26.

"I think we bounced back the second game," said Lapwai coach Bob Sobotta. "We started moving the ball a bit better offensively, and defensively (had) a good effort throughout the lineup.

"This was a good setup, to get a couple games with teams from the Yakama and Coeur d'Alene reservations to play both our boys and girls," Sobotta said. "So it was a good day."

The Lewiston Bengals fended off visiting nonleague rival Chiawana at Booth Hall.

After trailing slightly through the first quarter, Lewiston made a 16-1 showing in the second for a 26-14 halftime lead. A third-quarter rally from Chiawana was stemmed as the Bengals reasserted themselves with clutch shooting in the fourth.

Cameron Cady was Lewiston's offensive powerhouse for the game with 17 points, and snagged eight rebounds. Madison Stoddard added eight rebounds.

"It was our best defensive game; to hold that team to 33, I'm pretty happy," said Lewiston coach Dave Cornelia, whose team improved to 7-1. "Really proud of how we played against a good-quality opponent."

Sobotta took the opportunity to have what coach Eric Spencer called her "best game so far this year," scoring a game-high 17 points. Kelani Smith stood out for the Lapwai defense with six rebounds and three steals.

COTTONWOOD - The perfect season continues for the Prairie High girls.

The Pirates held visiting Troy scoreless in the first quarter to cruise to a Whitepine Division I win.

"It seemed like it was kind of a slow, sluggish game," Prairie coach Lori Mader said. "I think Troy played a great second half. Our kids just need to stay mentally focused. They played good pressure defense in the first half."

Angela Wemhoff recorded 10 points, 10 steals and seven assists, and Josie Peery added nine points and five rebounds.

"She's just an incredible kid who plays hard," Mader said of Wemhoff. "She doesn't care if she's scoring, rebounding - she just leaves it out there on the floor every night."

KAMIAH - Genesee's Regan Zenner had seven steals, Courtney Burt added six steals and the Bulldogs - who finished with 24 steals - forced even more turnovers than the team officially kept track of in a Whitepine League Division I win over Kamiah.

There were plenty of big numbers for the Bulldogs. Anna Druffel put up 13 points and eight rebounds, and Burt also did a little of everything (11 points, six rebounds, three assists). That's the same number of dimes Zenner dropped, while also scoring seven points and pulling down seven rebounds.

"She's just all over the place," Genesee coach Brandon McIntosh said of Zenner, who has point-guard capabilities but plays the 4 spot. "She works tremendously hard, is unselfish and flies under the radar. But all she cares about is the team succeeding and she helps us do that."

Also key for the Palouse squad's win were Burt and Emerson Parkins rotating defensively on Kamiah star Lacey Kludt, who was held to six points.

NEZPERCE - Sharing is caring, at least for the Nezperce girls.

Kourtne Carpenter and Sydney Boyer dished out a combined 17 assists to lead the Indians to a win over Logos of Moscow in a Whitepine Division II meeting.

"It was a great team effort and a lot of fun," Nezperce coach Dave Snodgrass said. "I had four kids in double figures and another kid with eight points. They were sharing the ball."

Carpenter finished with 10 points, nine assists and seven steals. Boyer added 15 points and eight assists for the Indians (6-1, 4-0).

"Her job is to take care of the ball," Snodgrass said of Carpenter. "She's a good player, good leader who keeps her head. Even if she makes a mistake, she comes back and does her job."

Bea Whitling led the Knights (2-5, 2-2) with 13 points.

"She makes you alter a lot of shots," Snodgrass said. "I bet she had eight or nine blocked shots, but we kept going at her. They've got a couple of really good players. ... These guys are much better than last year, they make you earn it."

St. Maries 55, Orofino 27

OROFINO - The Orofino Maniacs opened Central Idaho League play with a home contest against St. Maries, but the quick-tempo Lumberjacks lineup proved too much to overcome.

"They scored a lot of points against us in transition; they created a lot of pressure and turnovers," Orofino coach Garett Bretz said. "They probably got 85 percent of their points doing that."

Brigid Hill led the way for the Maniacs (4-4, 0-1) with 11 points in the defeat.

"She played pretty well, she got herself in position several times to get shots at the basket," Bretz said. "She also rebounded well and had a couple of good putbacks."
