KENDRICK - Though there were a lot of early-season mistakes, the Deary Mustangs hung on to beat Kendrick 51-48 in a nonleague girls' basketball season opener of Whitepine League foes Tuesday.

Kendrick led 28-23 at the half, but only scored seven points in the third quarter while Deary scored 17. Kendrick outscored Deary 13-11 in the fourth but fell behind by three points in the end.

"We had a lot of early season mistakes but the girls didn't waiver," Deary coach Kendra Keen said. "Both teams fought pretty hard."

Coeur d'Alene 65, Moscow 32

COEUR D'ALENE - Marred by 34 turnovers, Moscow opened its season with a loss to Coeur d'Alene.

"I thought we'd be able to compete a little bit better with them and have a chance in the end," Bears coach Robin Barnes said. "(We had) 34 turnovers. A lot of that was their defensive pressure and quickness forcing our turnovers. Our vision was there, but we didn't execute."

Abi Quinnett led the way with 16 points and four rebounds for Moscow, while Taylor Anderson contributed eight points and seven rebounds. Brooks Sprenger had three of the Bears' four steals.

Quinnett, who is signed to play with the Idaho Vandals next season, is often the focal point of opponents' defenses, which was again the case against the Vikings. While that has been challenge throughout her career, living up to the "next Vandal prospect" hype has not.

Barnes said that will heighten the pressure placed on her this season.

"A little bit, she'll have a target, but on the other hand, she's already signed so the pressure is off," Barnes said. "It works both ways."
