AREA BRIEFS

Following his successful college career at Eastern Washington, Pullman native J.C. Sherritt will soon join the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League.

Sherritt - who won the Buck Buchanan Award as the top defensive player at the FCS level and helped the Eagles claim the national title - recently signed as a free agent with Edmonton. He will start working out with the team in May.

"The speed, strength and experience of players is different, and obviously, the field is quite a bit bigger, so there is a lot more running," Sherritt said of the CFL game. "I haven't watched nearly enough video to really talk in-depth about it. But like I found from high school to college, the speed is going to be a lot more intense and players are going to be a lot better."

Sherritt will join former EWU players Matt Nichols and Greg Peach with the Eskimos.

BASEBALL

Warriors-Coyotes rained out

CALDWELL - Lewis-Clark State's baseball schedule had gone as planned in recent weeks, but the Warriors were kept off the field Thursday by rain, their early-season nemesis.

L-C's series-opening contest with College of Idaho was postponed after a driving rainstorm made conditions difficult on the artificial surface at Wolfe Field.

The teams were already scheduled to play a doubleheader today, and will now also play a pair Saturday to make up for Thursday's game. Both twinbills will start at noon PDT.

This is the first time the Coyotes have had to postpone a home game due to rain since March 10, 2002.

But for the Warriors, it's the fifth series this season that has been interrupted by weather.

MOSCOW - Jordan Green, who was an assistant for Jon Newlee when he was at Idaho State, has rejoined Newlee with the Idaho women's basketball program.

Green had been at ISU from 2004, and worked for Newlee from 2004-08.

At Idaho, Green will coordinate recruiting and team travel, take on scouting responsibilities and work with Idaho's post players.

"I'm excited to have Jordan back on my staff," Newlee said. "When he worked for me at Idaho State he was a real energetic young coach, I thought he did a great job on the floor and a great job with our players and our player development. Now that he's here with a few more years under his belt, it's even better."

CROSS COUNTRY

Warriors sign Post Falls runner

Jacob Wimpenny, a senior at Post Falls High, has signed a letter of intent to run at Lewis-Clark State College next year, coach Mike Collins has announced.

Wimpenny is the second Trojan to sign with the Warriors' cross country program for next year, joining Keaton Trom.

Wimpenny was a member of the Trojans' state qualifying team his senior year and was voted as Most Inspirational by his teammates.
