Ian Snook of Clarkston and Meg Browning of Logos strided to titles Friday in the Lewiston Invitational cross country meet at Hells Gate State Park.

Snook won his third straight duel with Josh Dalton of Deary to lead the Clarkston boys to a team title. The Sandpoint girls also prevailed in a meet that drew five full teams plus individual entries.

Through the first half of the 5-kilometer boys' race, Snook ran neck-and-neck with Dalton, who had won three titles in May at the 1A Idaho state track meet.

But Snook pulled away to win in 18 minutes, 6 seconds, with Dalton second in 18:16. The Clarkston senior had finished two seconds ahead of Dalton in both the Seaport and Connell invitationals.

Clarkston coach Brian Denton said Snook took the dry conditions of the course into consideration when forming his race strategy.

"Ian ran a real smart race," he said. "He didn't want to follow Dalton through the dust the whole distance."

Browning of Logos-Moscow took control late to win the girls' race in 22:12, with Rachel Gundy of Asotin second in 22:16.

The Clarkston boys outscored runner-up Sandpoint 35-43 in the team race, helped by fifth- and sixth-place finishes by C.J. Knutson and Nick Rooney and by 14th- and 15th-place showings by Jonah Hocum and John Kane.

It was Clarkston's first title in the Lewiston meet in numerous years. The Bantams program has a turnout of 28 this year despite losing its usual input from Asotin High, which has started its own cross country program.
