SPOKANE VALLEY - Clarkston coach Justin Jones described the halftime discussion he had with his team, then trailing by seven points, as "really frank."
The Bantam boys' basketball team's response on Tuesday was rather frank, too.
The unbeaten Bantams, ranked No. 1 in the Washington Class 2A poll, turned that seven-point deficit into a 19-point lead in the third quarter and cruised past East Valley and for a fifth consecutive win in Great Northern League play by a 73-62 verdict.
The Knights scored 24 points in the second quarter, but the Bantams would answer with 26 of their own in the third. More importantly, Clarkston held its opponent to just six third-quarter points.
"We came out flat defensively tonight and East Valley really took advantage of that," Jones said.
"A really big spark off the bench was Jake Dwyer," added Jones, noting his sixth man would hit two of his three 3-pointers in the third quarter.
Clarkston now turns to Friday's Golden Throne game against rival Lewiston, before traveling north for Saturday's GNL contest at West Valley.

KOOSKIA - Orofino escaped a subpar outing from the free throw line to get the best of Clearwater Valley in a physical nonleague battle.
The Maniacs, who moved to 8-2 with the win, shot just 42 percent from the charity stripe but led convincingly after taking a 20-10 advantage in the first quarter.
"The first quarter was pretty decent basketball," Orofino coach Jeff Wright said. "After that, lots of loose balls, lots of fouls, lots of turnovers."
Four players fouled out of the game - three of those on CV's side - and 39 fouls were committed between the opponents.
Drake Kuykendall had seven points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Orofino, which got 16 points from Brendon Judd.

COLFAX - Kasey Johnson scored 23 points and Colfax's lead grew gradually during an eventual 22-point thumping of Northeast 2B League foe Reardan.
"There wasn't a huge explosion of points," Colfax assistant Randy Daniels pointed out.
It didn't matter for the Bulldogs, who outscored Reardan 22-10 in the third quarter and got most of their points during that period in transition.
Danny Robinson scored 14 more points for Colfax, which moved to 13-2 overall and 7-1 in league play with the win.

PALOUSE - The unbeaten Vikings held Dayton to just two points in each quarter and that dominating defensive gem improved the hosts to 13-0 on the year with a nonleague rout.
Matt Holbrook paced the Vikings with 20 points while Mitch Jamison added 15 points. Also standing out for the Vikings, Hunter Woltering flirted with a double-double with 10 rebounds and eight points.
Leading the defensive charge, Holbrook added three steals and Gar-Pal forced 22 turnovers.
"We just do such a good job with our guards of handling the ball and we just caused them such havoc," said Garfield-Palouse coach Tim Coles, who said Dayton was "totally inundated and about as dominated as you can get."

COEUR D'ALENE - Lewiston couldn't navigate through a field of Lake City trees and as a result, the Bengals dropped their first 5A Inland Empire League decision to the Timberwolves.
Lake City, with four players standing at 6-6 and two more at 6-4, outsized Lewiston and outdid the Bengals on the glass, where offensive rebounds would lead to a slew of points for the hosts.
"They destroyed us on the offensive glass and had second-chance points," said Lewiston coach Jayson Ulrich, who would point out that not a single player on the Lake City roster stands shorter than 6-1.
"They just have some beef on them."
Dakota Jackson hit three 3-pointers and led the Bengals with 12 points.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL
Lewiston 51, Lake City 39
COEUR D'ALENE - Lewiston survived an early scare, then fought off a stingy Lake City team in the second half to come away with an important 5A Inland Empire League victory away from home.
The Bengals need just two wins in their next two league games - against Coeur d'Alene, then Post Falls - to wrap up the league title.
Lewiston led by just three points at halftime, but kept building on its lead in the second half. The Bengals found themselves up by as many as 15 points in the fourth quarter, although it never felt as though they had put the game away, Lewiston coach Dave Cornelia said.
"It was just a good high school basketball game," Cornelia said.
Cali Moscrip hit five of her six attempts from the free throw line - most of those down the stretch.
"Cali's an 80 percent free throw shooter," Cornelia said, noting that the Bengals made a concerted effort to get the ball in her hands during the fourth quarter.
Emilee Schlader scored a team-high 12 points and came down with eight rebounds for the Bengals, who meet rival Clarkston in Friday's Golden Throne game at Lewis-Clark State College.

GRANGEVILLE - After leading by five points at halftime, unbeaten Colton went on a spree in the third quarter and blitzed its way to a nonleague win over Grangeville.
The Wildcats, who were up 27-22 at halftime, outscored the Bulldogs 25-7 in the third, thanks in part to a few defensive matchup switches, coach Clark Vining said.
Colton (13-0, winner of 57 straight) connected on 12 3-pointers on the evening, five of which came in the third. Savannah Chadwick made five triples and scored a game-high 24 points.
The Wildcats' defensive efforts were led by Rachel Meyer and Meghan Devorak, Vining said. Zoe Moser added 17 points, Rachel Meyer grabbed 11 rebounds and Haley Meyer tallied six points and six boards. Colton also got two 3's from Courtney Kimberling, who was back in action after missing time with an illness.
Grangeville (7-8) got 12 points from Hailey Sullivan and 10 from Madison Brown.

"We came out with a lot more confidence and energy, and it was good to get Swan back on," Sobotta said, noting that Swan hit four treys. "And when she's hitting her 3's, they have to close out harder on her and then she can get crafty."

DEARY - Making the most of an undermanned Kendrick team, Deary winded its opponent in the second half and outscored the Tigers 22-4 in the third and fourth quarters to come out wit its sixth win in Whitepine League Division II.
That came after Kendrick outdid Deary by a 20-11 margin in the first half.
But the Tigers, playing with just seven girls because of illness, scored just a pair of field goals in the second half - partially due to fatigue, partially due to Deary's increased awareness.
"It was fundamental things," Deary coach Kendra Keen said. "Backside help, better pressure on the ball. Little things."
Deary got a game-high 18 points from Brooke Swanson and held three of Kendrick's seven players scoreless.
