TACOMA, Wash. — Clarkston’s Nathan Somers claimed an individual state title in the triple jump with a leap of 45 feet, 3 inches at the Washington Class 2A/3A/4A state track meet on Thursday at Mount Tahoma High School.

Somers finished ahead of Orting’s Aiden Mendenhall who recorded a jump of 45-1.

Jordan Cassetto placed sixth in the girls’ high jump (4-10), which was another notable performance from the area.

Competition concludes today at the same site.

Pirates’ Tyler Slaybaugh wins state title in pole vault

YAKIMA, Wash. — Tyler Slaybaugh secured Pomeroy’s ninth state pole vault title in the past 10 meets, clearing a height of 12-9 to win the event at the Class 1B championships at Eisenhower High School.

Slaybaugh, the defending 100-meter state champion, matched the 1B state meet record of 11.19 seconds in the preliminary round. Ron Stephens of Mt. Rainier Lutheran ran the same time in 2015.

Slaybaugh’s teammate, Levi Bowen, finished second in the pole vault with a mark of 11-09.

Garfield-Palouse’s Brendan Snekvik was the runner up in the boy’s 1,600 with a time of 4:30.45. The Vikings’ Ashleigh Hightree was third in the girl’s 1,600 (5:28.50).

The meet continues today.

Warriors’ 3,200 relay team breaks own program record at Nationals

MARION, Ind. — The Lewis-Clark State men’s 3,200 relay team, consisting of Kobe Wessels, Cooper Carlson, Griffen Parsells and Carter Gordon, set a new program record, surpassing their own previous mark set just a day earlier at Indiana Wesleyan University.

The group finished third in the event, clocking a time of 7:29.42. The previous record of 7:35.30 was set during the event’s prelims on Wednesday.

The Warriors’ Sydnie Zywina finished fifth in the women’s triple jump with a leap of 40-41/4.

The NAIA national meet continues today at the same site.

Cougars qualify two for NCAA quarterfinals

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Washington State’s Maribel Caicedo set a new school record, facility record, and national-leading time in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 12.49 — the sixth-fastest in the world this year at the NCAA preliminaries at the University of Arkansas.

Caicedo’s first-place finish in the event qualified her for the NCAA quarterfinals. Teammate Micaela De Mello also secured a spot in the quarterfinals with a fifth-place showing of 12.85.

Nana Gyedu set a school record in the women’s shot put with a throw of 56-61/2 — good for eighth place.

The quarterfinals begin on Saturday at the same site.

Bears clean up 4A IEL baseball awards

Moscow earned multiple Class 4A Inland Empire League all-league honors, including MVP which went to senior Levi Anderson.

Junior pitchers Butch Kiblen and Connor Isakson were recognized, and Bears coach Griffin Rod was named coach of the year.

Senior Jamison Green was the lone Moscow outfielder to earn All-IEL honors. Junior JP Breese, junior Tyson Izzo and senior Ethan McLaughlin rounded out the Bears’ honorees.

Moscow’s Connor Isakson was chosen as the Class 4A tournament MVP by Idahosports.com on Tuesday.

Isakson was 4-for-7 at the plate, scored four runs and notched three RBI.

Levi Anderson and Jack Driskill were also honored.

Potlatch’s Clark earns MVP honors in Class 1A

Jack Clark of Potlatch was named the Class 1A tournament MVP by Idahosports.com on Tuesday, in recognition of his standout performance that led the Loggers to the state championship victory over Troy.

The senior pitcher yielded one earned run on six hits while striking out 10 batters in the team’s victory.

Fellow hurlers Trebor Altman (Clearwater Valley), Ty Koepp (Kendrick) and Jameson Morris (Potlatch) were also recongized.

Pullman, Clarkston nab all-district honors

Pullman and Clarkston earned multiple Class 2A All-Greater Spokane League honors, it was announced May 14.

On the boys side, Clarkston coach John Kowatsch and Pullman coach Cody Wendt shared the coach of the year award.

Aditya Bose-Bandyopadhyay, Ben Lee, Mir Park, and Reed Newell of the Greyhounds were all named to the first team, and they were joined by Cody Whittle, Alex Whittle, and Xander VanTine of the Bantams.

Pullman’s Diana Gutierrez was named league MVP for the girls, while Clarkston coach Margie Denton earned coach of the year honors. The first team selections included the Bantams’ Gabie Mills, Olivia Gustafson, Ella Leavitt, Kayla Frei, and Eloise Teasley, as well as the Greyhounds’ Lynnsey Biorn and Jasmine Thapa.

Quail Ridge’s Carlson wins Washington Open

KENT, Wash. — Clarkston native Tyler Carlson won the Muckleshoot Casino Resort Washington Open Invitational at Meridian Valley Country Club on Wednesday.

Carlson, representing Quail Ridge Golf Course, carded a two-round total of 8-under 136, besting Johnny Carey of Mill Creek Country Club by one stroke.

Carlson, an Oregon State graduate, notched a 6-under 66 in the opening round and a 2-under 70 in the second round, giving him his two-day total.
