POST FALLS — Traveling Moscow found its first boys soccer win of the season on Saturday, going ahead after only five minutes of play and riding its advantage all the way to a 1-0 finish against the host Post Falls Trojans.
Jonas Mordhorst passed to Ty Kindelspire for a kick into the upper-left corner of the goal in what would prove to be the lone score of the day — though the Bears (1-4, 1-3 Inland Empire League) had many more looks, tallying 19 shots. Moscow goalkeeper Wyatt Thornycroft was credited with two saves in the shutout.
“We had a couple things click for us,” Moscow coach Caleb Brooks said. “We had a kind of a breakthrough; we went for more attacking, and we’re expecting some similar results in the next week.”

SANDPOINT — In what coach Scott Wimer called a “big, huge win for us” over a returning state championship team, Lewiston remained unbeaten in Inland Empire League competition with a shutout of host Sandpoint.

Bengals win Silver bracket
FREEMAN, Wash. — Playing in the Rip-A-Shot Tourney at Freeman High School, Lewiston dropped its opening match of the day to Chelan but rebounded with wins over Medical Lake, Pullman, Adna and Ritzville for a 4-1 event record.
Having finished second from their group in pool play, the Bengals (9-3) clinched a Silver bracket title with the Ritzville match. Coach Halle White named Brooke Bernal and Anna Ready as “significant players for the day” in the Lewiston run.

Fenley, Crawford lead Bears, area
SPOKANE — Ethan Fenley of Moscow led all Tribune-area runners with a 2.5-mile time of 13 minutes, 27.30 seconds in the Highlander Invitational hosted by Shadle Park High School, taking seventh in the sophomore boys race and leading the Bears to a second-place team showing for that class of the large meet featuring a separate race for each grade level.
On the girls side, the Bears’ Cora Crawford took seventh in the junior race with a mark of 16:02.10.

COULEE, Wash. — Garfield-Palouse suffered a nonleague road defeat at the hands of host Almira Coulee-Hartline.

COLFAX — Kurui Evans of host Washington State won the men’s race with an 8-kilometer time of 22 minutes, 46.8 seconds and fellow Coug Zenah Cheptoo topped the women’s 6K in 20:04.0 in the Cougar Classic meet held Friday at Colfax Golf Club.
Sam Fulbright was the top performer for the Vandal men with a 19th-place 24:25.7 — just ahead of Lewis-Clark State senior standout Carter Gordon, who clocked the 10th-fastest 8K time in school history at a 20th-place 24:27.0. Idaho’s Constance Paolini mirrored Fulbright with a 19th-place 21:18.7 in the women’s 6K, and freshman Lily Bennett led the Warrior women with a 23:15.7 performance.

Cougs come through five-setter
SEATTLE — Washington State closed out its appearance at the Husky Invitational by winning a five-set epic over nonconference opponent UC Davis.
The Cougs came through 25-16, 14-25, 23-25, 25-14, 15-13 in a result that might have washed away some of the bad taste of their defeat to the host Washington Huskies a day earlier.
Katy Ryan (17 kills), Italia Bernal (30 assists) and Emma Barbero (25 digs) were statistical leaders while Sage Brustad added a double-double of 13 kills and 12 digs in the victorious effort for WSU (4-3).
Warriors win fourth straight
PORTLAND — Lewis-Clark State concluded a five-match road swing with a 25-13, 25-27, 25-19, 25-15 decision over Cascade Conference foe Multnomah (Ore.).
Juliauna Forgach Aguilar had another standout offensive performance with 24 kills — tied for fourth-most by a Warrior in a four-set match — while Esther Kailiponi filled up the stat sheet with 21 assists, 12 digs and four service aces. This was the fourth consecutive victory for LCSC (8-3, 5-1).
Vandals conclude tourney run
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. — Fresh off their first win of the season, the Vandals suffered consecutive setbacks on Day 2 of the Siena Saints Invitational to conclude their run in the event.
Idaho (1-8) first fell to New Jersey Institute of Technology 25-23, 25-13, 25-20, then suffered a similar 25-15, 25-14, 25-20 loss to Syracuse. Zuzanna Wieczorek’s 15 kills in the the first match, Miya Carmichael’s 26 total digs on the day, and Natalia Wielgus’ combined total of 44 assists were among the statistical bright spots for the Vandals.

WSU’s Tse/Nakagawa reach semis
SAN FRANCISCO — Washington State senior Elyse Tse and junior Yura Nakagawa posted an 8-6 proset win over Virginia Tech’s Ozlem Uslu and Mila Mulready on Friday to reach the semifinals in the Battle in the Bay at the California Tennis Club, but fell 8-3 there on Saturday to Oklahoma State’s Ange Oby Kajuru and Anastasiya Komar.
