Lewiston team headed to Cali

A team of Lewiston little leaguers are headed to California after winning two state championship games on Saturday. The Lewiston 11-12 year-old softball all-stars defeated Southwest Ada County 22-5 and 19-6 in a best-of-three title tournament at Airport Park.

Both games ended in a mercy-ruling, with the first ending after five innings and the second after four.

Rylie Reagan pitched seven innings for Lewiston, entering the first game in the third inning. She allowed only one hit in the second game, and struck out nine batters.

"She shut them down in the second game," Lewiston coach Ryan Shoults said. "She pitched really well."

Next up is the U.S. regionals tournament in San Bernadino, Calif., which starts July 23 and runs through July 30.

"They've been gradually getting better every practice," Shoults said, adding that the team has only been together for a month.

Pitcher Rachel Rose and catcher Taryn Barney both traveled to regionals with an all-star team last year.

Shoults previously coached little league baseball, and took an all-star team to regionals in California in 2014.

Former WSU standouts on tap for Australia at Olympics

PULLMAN - Washington State University alums Aron Baynes and Brock Motum have both made the 12-man roster for the Australian Olympic Men's basketball team, also known as the Boomers, Basketball Australia announced Monday.

Baynes, who played for the Cougars between 2006-09, is currently a power forward for the Detroit Pistons. He led the Cougars to back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances in 2007 and 2008; WSU advanced as far as the Sweet 16 during his junior year. This is his second Olympics, following the 2012 London Olympics.

Motum graduated from WSU in 2013 and now plays for Zalgiris Kaunas of Lithuania. During his senior year, he led the Pac-12 in scoring with 18.7 points per game.

While Baynes and Motum never wore a WSU jersey at the same time, both played with Klay Thompson (2009-11), who was named to the U.S. Olympic Men's Basketball team two weeks ago.
