BURLINGTON, Wash. - Darren Black, a former golf standout from Lewiston who played at Lewis-Clark State, will be teeing it up next summer with some lucrative prizes on the line.

Black, now the PGA professional at the San Juan Golf and Country Club in Friday Harbor, Wash., finished fourth in the Pacific Northwest PGA Professional Championship on Thursday at Avalon Golf Links in Burlington.

He shot 70, 73 and 73 during the tournament's three rounds to claim $3,000 in prize money.

That placing earns him a chance to compete in the 43rd PGA Professional National Championship, held next July 27-30 at the French Lick (Ind.) Resort. All four rounds are broadcast by The Golf Channel.

The top 20 finishers in that tournament will receive entry into next summer's PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisc.

Tatham, Whidbee both absorb losses

RENTON, Wash. - Moscow's Nikki Tatham and Pullman's Paige Whidbee both fell in their flight consolation finals Thursday at the Pacific Northwest Golf Association's Junior Girls' Amateur Championship.

Tatham lost on the 19th hole to Haley Kruse of Victoria, British Columbia, in the fourth flight consolation final.

Whidbee went down 3 and 1 to Kelly Miller of Federal Way, Wash., in the sixth flight consolation final.

WSU rowers excel in Canada Games

PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND, Canada - Four Washington State women's rowers participated in the finals in two separate events Thursday at the Canada Games, taking home a gold, two silvers and two bronzes.

The event is being held at the Southwest River on Prince Edward Island,

Incoming transfer Lisa Roman captured the gold for British Columbia in the women's pairs.

Rising redshirt sophomore Sarah Powell, rising sophomore Katie Dick and Roman competed for B.C. in the women's eight race and took home the silver with a time of 4:12.76.

Incoming transfer Jessica Start represented her native Saskatchewan in the event, taking home the bronze.

Dick and Powell faced Start again in the quadruple scull as B.C. once again took home the silver. Start's Saskatchewan team took the bronze.

Dick and Roman will be back in action Friday as they both will participate in the women's four at 12:10 p.m.
