Students will discuss time in wilderness

MOSCOW - University of Idaho students who spent a semester at the Taylor Wilderness Research Station in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness Area will talk about their experiences Wednesday.

The talk and presentations will be from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Clearwater Room of the Idaho Commons Building on the UI campus.

The students, who participated in "Semester in the Wild," are engaged in classes such as river ecology, environmental writing, Western literature, wilderness management and outdoor leadership. Faculty from the university took turns teaching at the ranch, an inholding surrounded by the 2.3 million-acre wilderness area in the central part of the state. The student presentations are the culmination of the class. Group presentations will be 20 minutes long, with time for questions and answers at the end.

Clearwater Ski Club sets annual meeting

PIERCE - The Clearwater Ski Club, a local nonprofit that operates Bald Mountain Ski Area near here, will hold its annual meeting Dec. 14 at the Bald Mountain lodge.

The day's activities will start at 10 a.m. and include chores aimed at getting the lodge ready for opening, a covered-dish lunch at noon and the annual meeting agenda at 1 p.m.

Volunteers sought for NRA program

The Jack O'Connor Hunting Heritage and Education Center is seeking interested volunteers to assist with a National Rifle Association, Youth Hunter Education Challenge Program.

Volunteers need to have good teaching skills and be able to work well with kids, parents and other volunteers in a classroom setting. They must know subject matter in a minimum of one or more of the following disciplines: archery, wildlife identification, shotguns, hunter safety, orienteering, light rifles, muzzleloaders or hunter responsibility testing.

Bird watchers brace for Christmas count

Area bird watchers are gearing up for the annual Christmas bird counts.

Counts will be conducted by volunteers in the Moscow, Pullman, Kendrick and Lewiston areas.

Those interested in participating in the Pullman count can contact Marie Dymkoski at marie-dymkoski@msn.com.

The Moscow area count will be led by Kas Dumroese, who can be contacted at kas.birder@gmail.com.

Those interested in participating in the Lewiston count can contact Justin Barrett at justin.barrett@idfg.idaho.gov.
