RED LODGE, Mont. -- A moose attacked and killed a Bozeman man near Red Lodge, Carbon County Sheriff Luke Schroder said.

Search and rescue teams found the battered body of Brian Edwards, 42, on Sunday morning, about 50 yards from the cabin where he was staying with his family and friends, Schroder said.

Edwards had blunt force injuries to his head and the area surrounding his body had been trampled as if by a large animal.

"Judging from the scene, it looked like a moose attacked him," Schroder said.

A large, wounded bull moose was reportedly spotted not far from the scene. Search teams also were chased from the area by a cow and a calf.

Edwards left the cabin 12 miles south of Red Lodge at about 3 p.m. Saturday, telling his family he would return within an hour. The family reported him missing just after 7 p.m.

Schroder said anglers, hikers and campers frequently see moose in the Beartooth Mountains, especially near water.

"A lot of people think they are a real docile creature," Schroder said. "But there's time when they can be very aggressive. This is the worst time of the year because they are in rut."
