Vote for Blankenship

Earlier this year, I made a very intentional move back to Moscow to enjoy a quality of life that’s becoming increasingly rare in the West. This beautiful place has so much going for it — a vibrant downtown, the university’s resources, arts and culture, outdoor recreation and civil civic participation — and it remains economically diverse. In other words, it has managed to avoid becoming an exclusive resort town.

If Moscow can stay focused on fair and affordable housing, I believe it will have a good chance preserving its beloved character and its spirit of including all people, no matter their economic status. That’s one reason why I’m voting for Bryce Blankenship for the Moscow City Council on Tuesday.

Blankenship proposes to recruit new members to serve on the city’s Fair and Affordable Housing Commission who know firsthand how difficult it is to live with unaffordable rent payments and for whom homeownership is out of reach. He advocates for leasing practices that are fair to both property owners and tenants during periods of economic uncertainty. He proposes that Moscow’s leaders learn from other cities that have seen vacation rentals prioritized over workforce housing, and then govern accordingly. Finally, Blankenship is looking for innovative ways to ensure Moscow has enough housing while keeping sprawl to a minimum and affordability at a premium.

Please join me in voting for Bryce Blank-enship Tuesday.

Supporting Drew Davis

I support Drew Davis for Moscow City Council. I’ve served with him as a member of the City Council for the past year and I have been impressed time and again with his integrity, honesty, competence, hard work and open mindedness.

He is always respectful and professional. He listens to his colleagues and his constituents and if there is disagreement, he works to find solutions that are in the best interest of the community.

He grasps issues quickly and asks probing questions. His experiences as an instructor for the University of Idaho Art and Architecture Department, as an architect and as a parent, have made him an excellent listener and problem-solver.

Drew has an extensive background in infrastructure, design and planning. He understands the need to create affordable housing and has worked on designing them. Early in his studies and throughout his career he has built sustainable practices for buildings into his designs.

He has no hidden agenda. He loves Moscow and advocates for things people care about in our wonderful city. He’s the kind of person we need on the City Council.

Baloney or facts?

Baloney or facts: This is the pondering thoughts for all to ponder. This past Sunday, I read a letter to the editor from Chris Bunce, my challenger for Clarkston School District Director No. 5, who wrote the word “baloney” twice in her letter.

Facts are as shown on the Clarkston School District website as reported to our state:

1. 73% of students graduated.

2. 2,509 students attended school:

a. 29.5% of students met math standards (740 students)

b. 37.7% of students met science standards (945 students)

c. 44.6% of students met English, reading and language standards (1,119 students)

When I heard Chris Bunce, in the two debates, say our students are doing great as compared to other school districts, I am not sure that this is baloney, where she says, “We can do better.” I say, “We must do better.” I have a vision to drive for excellence and success where students learn to earn their education and take pride in themselves for what they earn.

I hope to earn your votes and serve everyone for School Director No. 5.

Support Davis for council

I am writing this letter in support of Drew Davis.

Drew is running for Moscow City Council, and I support him, not only because of his experience in the position but, more importantly, because of my personal experiences with him.

I’ve known him as a student, as an adjunct instructor and as a member of the community. From the beginning, I have appreciated his open-minded attitude, willingness to listen to all opinions, his ability to solve problems creatively, and his care and concern for the people he works with and for.

Drew believes in providing service to his community to improve the quality of all our lives. I will certainly vote for him Tuesday.
