William Joseph Friede, 79, Vancouver, Wash.

Feb. 3, 1931 - May 15, 2010

William (Bill) was born Feb. 3, 1931, in the heart of the Great Depression. He grew up in the Southside of Chicago and worked hard in his parents' grocery store.

Bill attended Southside Chicago High School, where he excelled in football. He had 17 scholarship offers out of high school. Initially, Bill attended Syracuse University on a football scholarship.

Bill entered the service and was in the U.S. Air Force for three years, nine months and 27 days. Many of those years were spent stationed in Iceland. After the service, the GI bill allowed him to finish college. He followed the only family he had, moved to Idaho and attended the University of Idaho.

In 1957, at the University of Idaho, Bill met Rhoda McGraw, the love of his life for more than 50 years. Bill and Rhoda's four children, Mike, Karla, Tana and Lisa, also each found their way to University of Idaho at various points in their college years. Bill adored his children and his seven grandchildren and spent many hours reading, feeding and caring for them.
