Viola Gehring Nuxoll, of Cottonwood, passed away Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston, from complications of a broken hip. She was 81 years of age.
Viola was born Dec. 4, 1927, at Cottonwood, to Bernard and Kathryn Baune Gehring of Keuterville. She was the oldest of four children. She attended a one-room schoolhouse at Moughmer Point in Keuterville and then graduated from St. Gertrude's Academy in 1945.
She married William J. Nuxoll on Jan. 28, 1947, at Keuterville. Together they raised four children at Cottonwood, where they operated Nuxoll Shell Service for 44 years, until retirement. They enjoyed traveling, playing pinochle, and friends. She was passionate about her family and her beautiful home and yard. She received special recognition in 2007 from the Grangeville Garden Club for her landscaping and gardening talents. You could always count on seeing Mom puttering outside in her yard.
Viola was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and St. Bonaventure's Guild. She played cards every Tuesday with girlfriends and also was in the yearly marathon pinochle group. She enjoyed donating her time playing bingo with the residents of the Grangeville Rehabilitation Center. She enjoyed doing ceramics and creating crafts with her sister, Betty, for Christmas gifts for her family and also enjoyed making applesauce, jams and "Chocolate Delight."
Daughters Sharon Stolz and her husband Greg of Greencreek and Lynette Walton of Lewiston and son Donald Nuxoll and wife Wanda of Cottonwood survive her. Also, she is survived by six grandchildren, Kim Hasenoehrl of Nampa, Ryan Stolz of Colfax, Scott Walton of Pomeroy, and Renee' Walton, Ashley Nuxoll and Katie Nuxoll, all of Lewiston; and by six great-grandchildren - Ashlee, Julia, Amanda, Ebony, Trevin and Wyatt; along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was also very close to her caregiver, Barb Wilkerson of Cottonwood.
Viola was preceded in death by her parents; husband Bill; son Billy; and brothers Ken and Ed.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at Uhlorn Funeral Home in Cottonwood. A rosary will be said at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Cottonwood, with the funeral Mass following at 11 a.m. Burial will be at the Cottonwood Catholic Cemetery. Dinner will follow at the Cottonwood Community Hall.
