Susan Christine (Welch) Trickey was born Dec. 9, 1951, in Denver. She left this world peacefully March 5, 2024, in Lewiston after a long battle with dementia. A service will be held to celebrate her at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 16, 2024, at St. Stanislaus Church, 633 Fifth Ave., Lewiston. A reception will follow.
Susan was the first of five children of Bill and Donna Crumpton. Bill and Donna divorced later and Donna married Bill Welch, “Pop,” who adopted all five kids and raised them as his own.
Susan lived in Denver until 1984. During that time, she was a student at Machebeuf High School and graduated in 1970. She worked for the state of Colorado and the Social Security Administration where she met her husband, Max B. Trickey. She was especially proud of her time serving in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1979-85. Susan and Max welcomed their first son, Jacob, in 1982. They moved to The Dalles, Ore., in 1984 where Max continued his work with SSA while Susan devoted her time to raising their children. Their second son, Samuel, was born in The Dalles in 1985. The family moved to the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley in 1989 where Susan immersed her life in the boys’ schooling and growth. She particularly enjoyed the time the boys were enrolled at St. Stanislaus Parochial School. The Trickey household was always full of the boys’ friends growing up, thanks to her love of the kids.
Susan had lupus and often held court in the house over the years to dispense love, advice and discipline to all who needed or asked for it. The only thing that rivaled her love for her boys was her love of cats, which she was never without. She always had one by her side and had as many as seven at one time. Cody and Lucas, in particular, were like third and fourth children to her.
After leaving the valley in retirement in 2007, Susan moved back in 2015 to be near her first granddaughter. She loved spending time with Evelyn and was a major influence on her reading and writing. Evelyn was a bright star in Susan’s final years.
Susan was preceded in death by her beloved Pop; mother, Donna; and brothers Thomas and David. She is survived by husband, Max; son Jacob and partner, Mary Stone; son Samuel and fiancee, Samantha; sister Debbie Welch; brother Mark Christopher and his wife, Teena; granddaughter Evelyn, born to Jacob and Alaina Trickey; granddaughter-to-be Violet, soon to be born to Sam and Samantha; and many, many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.
Susan’s sister-in-law, Suzette Trickey, defined Susan to a T. “She was one of a kind, no filters, and she often strayed into the TMI lane, but, that was part of her charm and humor.”
When Susan was born, she cried and the world around her rejoiced. Susan lived her life so that when she died, the world around her cried, and she rejoiced.
