----MOSCOW A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today for Nancy Jackson, a 1972 Moscow High School graduate killed in an avalanche while climbing Mount Manaslu in the Himalayas.
Jackson, 34, was one of three climbers from a Seattle-based expedition who died in the avalanche March 27 on Manaslu, the world's seventh-highest mountain.
She was Moscow's 1971 Junior Miss, earned a degree in chemical engineering from Oregon State University in 1977 and a master's from the University of Washington in 1980. She worked as an environmental engineer.
She began climbing mountains in the early 1980s and worked as a climbing guide for two years in the mid-80s. She climbed Mount Rainier in Washington 50 times, and topped Mount McKinley in Alaska and two Mexican mountains, including Mount Aconcagua, the tallest mountain in the Americas. The team she was with in the Himalayas hoped to make the first American ascent of Manaslu, a 26,775-foot peak on the border between Tibet and Nepal.
She is survived by her parents, Melbourne and Betty Jackson of Moscow; a brother, Gary Jackson of San Diego; and two sisters, Linda Rodriguez of Salem, Ore., and Laurie Jackson-Steinbock of Toledo, Ohio.
The memorial service will be at the First United Methodist Church at Moscow, with the Rev. Robert Walker officiating.
