Ken R. Key Sr. “Kink,” age 79, of Grangeville, sadly passed away at his home on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, with his children by his side. He was the rock of our family, our father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend. He will be greatly missed and will always hold a special place in our hearts.

Ken was born on June 5, 1944, in Wenatchee, Wash., to Oda and Thedis Key. He was the fourth to join the family. The family later moved from Prineville, Ore., then to Grangeville in 1952.

Ken married the love of his life, Carly Murray, on July 20, 1961. He later joined the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Lewis and was honorably discharged in 1963. Ken and Carly made their home in Grangeville and welcomed their first child, Mari, in 1961, and added a son, Kenneth Jr., in 1964.

Ken’s love of the outdoors and timber led to his passion for falling trees and logging. Ken and his brother Bill started Key Logging in 1966. They then expanded their company and created Keymore Logging in 1984. Ken and Bill retired from Keymore Logging in 2005, but Ken’s love of timber didn’t end there. Ken purchased a lumber mill and created Key Lumber in 2005. He continued this operation until his passing. His lumber legacy will continue with his son-in-law and grandson.

Ken had a passion for the outdoors and music. If he wasn’t at his lumber mill, he was hunting in his favorite spot, or telling hunting stories to all who would listen. He loved to waltz with his favorite dance partners. Ken enjoyed playing the fiddle and would often try to recreate his favorite tunes. His family was his world and he loved with his whole heart.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, several siblings and various family members.

He leaves behind his children: Mari (Andy) Schumacher of Grangeville, Kenneth Key of Grangeville, and Kim (Jerry) Titus of Clarkston; grandchildren: Andy (Cori) Schumacher of Grangeville, Alecia (Erik) Hagen of Grangeville, Stephen (Chelsie) Key of Lewiston, and Tanner (Anna) Key of Lewiston; great-grandchildren: Tate and Allie Schumacher, Capri and Cohen Hagen, and Emma and Oda Key. He also leaves behind his best friend and brother, Bill Key; sister Betty Altman, brother Tony Key, and sister Sherry Pewitt.

As per Ken’s request, there will be no funeral service but a small private ceremony to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, and to honor his memory, please spend time with your loved ones and hold them dear to your heart.
