Ellen Elizabeth Middleton, of Lewiston and formerly of Walla Walla, passed away Tuesday, March 16, 2010, in Lewiston at the age of 87. She was born to Emma and Earl Shiplett in Deer Lodge, Mont., on July 15, 1922; she was one of five children raised largely on a Montana ranch.
Ellen and her family enjoyed music widely, with many musical gatherings culminating in their home outside Deer Lodge.
During Ellen's high school years, she was an accomplished diver and scholar. Throughout life, she enjoyed ice skating on frozen ponds, hay rides, hummingbirds, gardening, flowers, family picnics and the occasional card game.
Ellen married Benjamin B. Middleton Jr. from Anaconda, Mont., Dec. 27, 1940. On an early date, Ben held his arm out to Ellen and said, "You like chicken? Grab a wing!"
They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1990 at the family cabin in Montana.
Ellen served on many church committees, and her neighborly ways could always be counted on for cookies or a fresh pan of homemade macaroni and cheese. Ellen always had a smile, no matter what the circumstance or history.
Ellen moved to Lewiston in 2003 and joined the Congregational-Presbyterian Church.
Ellen was preceded in death by her husband, Ben, and her four siblings.
She is survived by her children, David Middleton of Colfax, Karen and Bud Van Stone of Lewiston, and Christina Middleton of Walla Walla. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will take place in April. The family suggests memorials be made to Congregational-Presbyterian Church in Lewiston, or to the Parkinson's Foundation.
