Doris Kathryn Harlow, 87, a longtime Pullman resident, passed away Sunday, Oct. 2, 2011, at Memory Villas at Bishop Place in Pullman of age-related causes. Doris was born Oct. 4, 1923, in Moscow, to Price and Gladys Neighbors Tate.
She grew up in Pullman and graduated from Pullman High School in 1941.
Doris worked at the Washington State College bookstore as a secretary and at her sister's logging camp as a cook.
On Sept. 6, 1942, Doris married her high-school sweetheart, Merle Harlow, at the Greystone Church in Pullman, They have made Pullman their home since.
Through the years Doris enjoyed her roles as loving wife, mother and homemaker, and was always known for her clean home. Her family meant the world to her and she enjoyed all of the wonderful times they spent at their summer lake home at Hope, Idaho, on Lake Pend Oreille.
Doris and Merle traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and internationally. Their travels took them to such places as Australia, Hong Kong, Mexico and Taiwan. She especially enjoyed the time they spent in Hawaii.
Doris enjoyed the Pullman community and was a vibrant member of it. She was a member of the Ladies of the Oriental Shrine, the Daughters of the Nile and several ladies community clubs. She loved to dance and was a member at several area dance clubs. Doris enjoyed playing bridge and belonged to the Pullman Bridge Club. She was a devoted member of the Pullman Presbyterian Church, serving as a deacon.
Doris is survived by her loving husband of 69 years, Merle, at the family home outside Pullman; her two sons, David Harlow of Palouse and Glen Harlow of Burien, Wash.; one brother, Warren Tate; her grandson, Trieve Harlow; her great-grandson, Eden Whiteaker Harlow; and her many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Doris was preceded in death by her three brothers and four sisters.
Viewing for family and friends is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Thursday at Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman. The graveside service with lodge rites will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Pullman Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 2 at the Pullman Presbyterian Church, 1630 N.E. Stadium Way.
Memorial donations are suggested to the Pullman Presbyterian Church, the Alzheimer's Association or to the Shriner's Hospital.
