RIGGINS — A 54-year-old White Bird woman was killed late Thursday in a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 95 north of Riggins.

The person who died was Delsie Whinery, Idaho County Coroner Cody Funke confirmed Friday.

The Idaho State Police reported that about 9:25 p.m. a 1995 International tractor trailer pulling a car-hauler trailer with four vehicles, driven by a 62-year-old man from Nezperce, was traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 95 near milepost 211 when the vehicle crossed the centerline into the southbound lane and struck a southbound 2022 Chevrolet Trax head-on. The driver of the Chevy was the 54-year-old woman from White Bird.

The International and the trailer with the cars caught fire. The Chevy Trax traveled down a steep embankment and came to a rest.

The driver of the International managed to escape the vehicle and had minor injuries. The driver of the Chevy was transported by ground ambulance to an area hospital and later died of her injuries. Her next of kin has been notified.

The roadway was blocked for about four and a half hours. The incident remains under investigation by the state police.
