Idaho health officials are warning consumers against drinking certain varieties of Jumex brand fruit nectars and Jumex pineapple juice that have been recalled because of lead contamination.
The affected products were discovered in southwestern Idaho Tuesday, according to Idaho Department of Health and Welfare officials.
It is not known how many cans were distributed in Idaho.
According to a bulletin received from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the high concentrations of lead in these products could lead to severe injury, especially in infants, children and pregnant women. Extreme cases may be fatal, the bulletin said.
Vilore Foods Co. of Laredo, Texas, imports the affected products from Mexico and has initiated the nationwide recall.
The recalled products include: plum nectar, all lots; apricot nectar, 2110 or lower; apple nectar, 2092 or lower; guava nectar, 2099 or lower; mango nectar, 2096 or lower; papaya/pineapple nectar, 2084 or lower; peach nectar, 2093 or lower; pear nectar, 2104 or lower; pineapple juice, 2141 or lower; tamarind nectar, 2142 or lower.
Also recalled are Jumex products with the last four numbers ranging from 9000 to 9365.
Consumers are asked to return these products to the store where they were purchased. Health officials recommended that anyone who has consumed the recalled products consult a doctor.
