The Idaho Transportation Department announced late Friday night U.S. Highway 12 was reopened to traffic between Lowell and Lolo Pass.

The highway, which had been closed for 15 days because of a series of large avalanches covering the roadway, was reopened at about 9:15 p.m.

According to an ITD news release, crews finished removing debris Friday from the last two avalanches discovered earlier in the week near milepost 132.

However, while the highway is now open, motorists can expect delays near milepost 134, about 34 miles east of Lowell, as crews remove a tractor-trailer from the Lochsa River.

The vehicle was swept into the river by one of the first four avalanches in the area. The driver escaped without injury. Flaggers and a pilot car will direct traffic through the area beginning at 9 a.m. today. Removal of the vehicle is expected to take most of the day.
