An Albertsons executive from Boise is the Idaho State Board of Education's newest member.
Andrew Scoggin was appointed by Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter Thursday to replace Bill Goesling of Moscow.
One northern Idaho resident, former Sen. John Goedde of Coeur d'Alene, was among the three finalists for the position. The other finalist was southeastern Idaho resident Adm. John Grossenbacher, former director of Idaho National Laboratory.
Scoggin has worked since 1993 for Albertsons Companies Inc., which owns Albertsons, Safeway and several other large food and drug stores. He earned undergraduate and law degrees from Brigham Young University.
"I am honored by Governor Otter's appointment," Scoggin said in a news release from Otter's office. "I believe that we have real momentum in the state of Idaho right now to move forward on an agenda of improving education by providing direction, accountability and transparency. And the Idaho State Board of Education should take the lead in this important effort."
He will serve a five-year term that runs until June 30, 2021.
Goesling, a retired U.S. Navy aviator and former educator, was appointed to the board in 2011. His term expired June 30.
The state board of education is the policymaking and oversight body for public education in Idaho, from kindergarten through university levels. Its members serve as the board of trustees for state-
sponsored four-year colleges and universities and as the board of regents for the University of Idaho.
Board of education members meet next on Wednesday and Thursday at Idaho State University in
Pocatello.
