PULLMAN - A man standing next to the roadway following an accident was struck by a vehicle attempting to avoid a collision with a car from the earlier wreck Thursday morning.

The accident occurred about 2:20 a.m. on State Route 270 about five miles east of Pullman, according to a Washington State Patrol news release.

According to the report, Ivan A. Brooks, 23, of Pullman, was westbound when he swerved his 2008 Toyota Corolla to avoid a vehicle that had been involved in a previous collision and slid on the icy road.

Shaun P. Wyspianski, 29, of Milford, Mass., was standing next to the driver's door of a stopped vehicle when he was hit. He was taken to Gritman Memorial Hospital in Moscow with undisclosed injuries.

The owner of the second vehicle, a 1991 Chevrolet Lumina, is Justin M. Strayhan, 31 of Moscow. He was uninjured, but the car received about $2,000 damage and had to be towed. Brooks' vehicle was driven from the scene, according to the report.

State police said the accident was likely caused by speed too fast for road conditions.
