LOS ANGELES -- "Out of Africa," the brooding epic of a Danish woman's life in colonial Kenya, won seven Oscars including best picture Monday, while " The Color Purple" suffered a stunning rejection, losing all 11 awards for which it competed.

Lewiston City Council Member L. Bud George announced Monday he will challenge fellow Democrat Paul L.C. Snider for his Nez Perce County Commission seat.

The city of Clarkston will send a stone tablet to Long Beach, Wash., for inclusion in a park being constructed there to honor explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark.
A statue of the two explorers will mark the spot where Clark carved a message on a tree 180 years ago, Long Beach officials said in a letter to the Clarkston City Council.
