The Nisqually John Fire was completely contained Sunday afternoon.

Nick Bell, deputy chief for Whitman County Fire District 14, said wildland firefighters from across the state worked to demobilize the blaze this weekend.

The fire district will continue to monitor the area after the Northeast Washington Interagency Incident Management Team handed over control Sunday evening, he added.

The blaze started Friday morning near Nisqually John Landing along Washington State Route 193 northwest of Clarkston. It spread into Steptoe Canyon that evening, and burned a total of 1,221 acres, Bell said.

No one was hurt and no structures were damaged by the fire, he said.

Bell said crews found the fire began along the roadside, however the cause is still undetermined and under investigation.

Fire districts in Whitman County, along with cities of Clarkston and Moscow, Asotin County and the Wheatland Fire District initially responded to the blaze. Fire management was handed over to the Northeast Washington Interagency Type 3 Incident Management Team on Saturday morning after state fire assistance was mobilized Friday evening, according to a news release by the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Crews officially contained the fire 50% Saturday evening and completely stamped out the fire Sunday evening, Bell said.
