A 59-year-old man was taken to the hospital with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in an incident Tuesday afternoon at Larch Lane, just east of the Lewiston city limits.

Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded at 2:12 p.m. Tuesday in the 900 block of Larch Lane. The caller reported a man in the home pointed a pistol at them, and said he fired off two rounds. Deputies arrived on scene but weren’t able to make contact with the person inside the home. The homes in the area were evacuated and the 800 block of Lapwai Road was closed for about three hours, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

The Lewiston SWAT team was used to make entry into the home. Inside, law enforcement found the man with what investigators believe is a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was then taken to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, according to the news release. The news release didn’t say what the man’s condition was.

Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating.

The news release mentioned the man’s name, but the Tribune doesn’t generally report the names of people who attempt or commit suicide.
