An open house for a Main Street corridor reconstruction project in Lewiston is set for 5:15 p.m. Tuesday at the Lewiston Public Library at 411 D St.
The project would upgrade utilities and streets, including underground infrastructure.
Improvements would include numerous updates such as better water pressure and flow for fighting fires, replacement of antiquated materials from the World War I era and reconstruction of the stormwater management system to prevent damage to private properties in significant rainfall events.
The city has budgeted $1.8 million per year for arterial street reconstruction for three years, and that money is covering the cost of the preliminary design, which is expected to be complete in November, according to materials provided by the city about the open house.
The city is considering seeking a general obligation bond to provide more revenue for the project that would need 67.66% voter approval to pass.
If voters approve a bond, the construction could start as early as the middle of 2026.
“The city believes that one big project will be more cost-effective and less disruptive to adjacent businesses than constructing incrementally over time,” according to what the city shared.
