A 25-year-old Lewiston man died Sunday morning of a gunshot wound near Soldiers Meadow Lake.
Ryan S. Rigney is believed to have been killed in a hunting accident, according to a news release issued by Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office.
Law enforcement and emergency medical crews from Life Flight and the Lewiston Fire Department were dispatched to the rural area at 7:42 a.m. for a reported self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police said it appears the gun’s discharge was unintentional.
Medics performed lifesaving measures, but Rigney was pronounced dead at the scene about 20 miles south of Lewiston. He and family members were hunting at the time of the accident.
“The Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation, but it appears to be an accidental gunshot,” Deputy Kris Schmidt said in a news release. “The Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind everyone of the importance of gun safety, especially during hunting season.”
On social media, Rigney described himself as a dedicated father and avid outdoorsman.
“When you think you are working hard, work harder,” he wrote.
Earlier this year, he and his 3-year-old son, Waylond Rigney, were the subject of a search when they went missing while hunting for shed antlers. They were later located in Orofino.
