LAPWAI — A 49-year-old Lapwai man died Friday night when he was involved in a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 95 near Lapwai, according to the Idaho State Police.

The crash happened at 10:56 p.m. Friday at milepost 301, just north of Lapwai, according to an ISP news release distributed early Saturday.

The wreck involved a Buick Park Avenue, driven by a 65-year-old man from Twisp, Wash., and a 2005 Kia Sorento, driven by a 41-year-old woman from Warrenton, Ore. The Lapwai man was a passenger in the Kia, according to the news release.

No names were provided in the news release.

The Buick was traveling north on the highway when it crossed the centerline into the southbound lane and collided with the Kia, according to the news release. Both vehicles went off the roadway and down a steep embankment. The Lapwai man was ejected from the Kia and died of his injuries at the scene, according to the news release.

The two drivers were taken to an area hospital. The Kia driver was wearing a seat belt; the passenger wasn’t. It’s unknown if the Buick driver was wearing a seat belt, according to the news release.

The roadway was blocked for approximately three hours after the wreck, and the incident remains under investigation by ISP.
