A workshop on landscaping for water conservation will be offered today by the Nez Perce County Extension System office at Lewiston.

The workshop will start at 1 p.m. at the Brammer Building, 1225 Idaho St. A tour will then be taken of grass plots at Grassland West Co. at Clarkston. Owner Bill Merrigan will talk about some of the more than 100 turf grass varieties grown in the plots.

Beginning at 2 p.m., Terry Finnerty, extension associate in the University of Idaho College of Agriculture, will talk about water conserving landscape practices.

Some of the topics to be covered include selecting grass varieties that survive drought, soil improvement for moisture retention, matching plants with the irrigation system, reducing turf areas, use of mulches, and selection and placement of ornamental plants.

Participants also will have the opportunity to develop a water conserving landscape design.
