BOISE -- Cheryl Miller, Idaho Republican Party executive director for less than a year and a half, has resigned in what GOP Chairman Trent Clark said was an amicable split.

"She and I had been talking about her career plans. She's going to be very active seeking a position on Idaho's national committee," Clark said.

"I asked her specifically to stay on through the primary."

He said Miller, who stepped down on Tuesday from her job running the GOP's day-to-day operations, plans to run for a position on the Republican National Committee when the party conducts its state convention in Pocatello in June.

Clark has juggled his office staff to make up for the sudden vacancy, and plans to use the money he will save by not paying Miller a salary to support the campaigns of state candidates.

"That gives me two months to do a little more leisurely search, and in the meantime I'm saving some money," he said.

Miller was marketing director for a construction company in January 1999 when she was hired as the party's executive director by then-Chairman Ron McMurray.
