The Idaho Transportation Department is asking those who need to renew their driver’s license or state identification card to either get it done before all Department of Motor Vehicle offices close Thursday and Friday for a computer upgrade, or wait until Aug. 20, when all the kinks are expected to be ironed out.

The department is upgrading its computer system for the first time since the 1980s, according to a news release. All county DMV offices that issue licenses and ID cards will be closed for the two days while the upgrade takes place.

County assessor’s offices that issue vehicle registrations and titles will remain open, but disability placards will not be available during the closure. DMV Administrator Alberto Gonzalez said customers should anticiplate delays while employees adjust to the new system when DMV offices reopen Monday.

The main DMV office in Boise will also be closed to the public Thursday and Friday, and the usual public telephone and email assistance with driving records, license extensions and reinstatement fees will not be available.
