BUFFALO EDDY — A skull and other bones were found Sunday by a Nez Perce County Search and Rescue volunteer along the Snake River south of Lewiston.

Reports indicate the volunteer found the skull near Buffalo Eddy on the Idaho side of the river. The volunteer reportedly stumbled upon the remains while some digging was underway in the area at about 2 p.m. Sunday.

The Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office dive team began searching the area Sunday and continued Monday. Sheriff Joe Rodriguez said several bones were found both in the river and on the bank. Rodriguez said it’s too early to determine the sex or age of the remains. He said it’s possible an animal got to the bones before they were found.

Many people have gone missing or drowned in the river whose bodies went unrecovered.
