Shooting to win in the 57th Kodak International Newspaper Snapshot Awards competition can be as simple as keeping your camera loaded and with you this summer.

That means at home as well as on your travels.

Cherished moments rarely wait for the photographer to find the camera or go to the store for more film. And missing a shot could mean missing $50, or even up to $10,000, if it's picked as the 1992 KINSA grand prize winner.

Local judges will be looking for several characteristics that make for a good photo.

*Human interest, the feeling it generates.

*General appeal, an eye-catching, fascinating factor.

*Uniqueness, a stroke of luck, one-in-a-million chance shot.

*Composition, a new view of a common subject.

Check the color or black-and-white snapshots you've taken since Jan. 1, 1990, and not previously entered in any KINSA competition, and those that you take this summer. Look for landscapes and scenics, animals, action, people (family and friends), the environment, abstracts or still life, and special moments.

Likely winners are ''people pictures'' that tell something special about the person in the photo; their feelings, mood, personality, expression, wonder, excitement and surprise.

Starting July 19 and running for six consecutive weeks, amateur photographers who live within the Tribune's circulation area are eligible to compete for the more than $50,000 in cash and prizes through international competition. Tribune mail subscribers also are eligible.

The deadline is Saturday of each week for photos to arrive by mail or be delivered to the Tribune for judging the following Monday. Local judges will select up to a dozen finalists each week and all the finalist will be judged again at the end of the contest to chose the ones to be sent to the international competition this fall. Weekly winners will be announced in the Tribune each Wednesday.

Mail photos to: Lewiston Tribune, KINSA photo editor, P.O. Box 957, Lewiston, ID, 83501.

Send a self-addressed, stamped envelope for the return of the photos, and be absolutely sure each print has a name and address on it, since there will be 1,500 entries here. Watch the Tribune for rules of the contest.
